A very popular lightheavyweight, Jose Martinez Valero was born in Alfara del Patriarca (Valencia), Spain around 1910 (He is reported as being 25 years old in December 1935). He fought as Martinez de Alfara, starting his pro career in 1927.

In 1930 he won the Spanish LH Championship with an 8-round decision over Antonio Gabiola.
