According to the Cincinnati Enquirer 3 Nov 1945 McDaniels was an amateur standout in Cincinnati and was upon turning pro unable to get a fight. He decided to go to New Orleans where he had tremendous success and then returned.

In 1941 he was the Ohio Lightweight AAU Champion.

In the 1941 AAU Nationals he was knocked out in the 2nd round by Foster Campbell of Denver.

10 April 1944 he beat Connie Frizzie of Boston in the first fight of the National AAU championships in the 147 pound class.

After a robbing a man of his coat and "some money" in Cincinnati, September 1950, McDaniels was declared mentally ill by a judge and sent to a hospital to be followed by 1-25 years in the pen. He was paroled in January 1952. Candy had been in trouble most of his life. He was arrested as early as 1935 by juvenile authorities as part of a gang that was robbing kids who went to the West End Theater. In 1945 he was arrested on a weapons charge.

Not sure when Edward "Candy" McDaniels was born. In his SSN card it says 1922. In his Ohio death certificate it says 1924. In the 1940 Census he is listed as 16. He was arrested for carrying a weapon in 1945 and was listed as 20 years old and a veteran who was wounded in the Pacific. At the time of his arrest and trial in late 1949 early 1950 he is listed as 23. On his Nov 1943 Marriage license he is listed as being 22. My guess is his SSN is correct
