Career Overview
Dalton was the captain of a tugboat on Lake Michigan called the Ingram and a part-time bare knuckle boxer of note. Among those he defeated were fellow noteworthy pugilists of the 1880s John Dwyer and John Donaldson.
Born on April 26, 1854 in Cleveland, Ohio, Dalton moved to Chicago in 1872. Known for his swift feet, Dalton was a talented clog dancer. After fighting Dalton, Dwyer named him one of the best young fighters in the country.
On August 31, 1881, at McCormick Hall in Chicago, he did well to last four rounds in an exhibition with future heavyweight champion John L. Sullivan, which led to future matches with Paddy Ryan and Peter Jackson.
