Johnny Persol 174 lbs beat Bobo Olson 176 lbs by MD in round 10 of 10

"Bobo Olson's defeat by majority decision was a costly loss for the 35 year old former middleweight champion. He had an unbeaten streak of eight and a victory would have iced a title fight in October with light heavyweight champion Willie Pastrano. Only Johnny Persol, a fast 24 year old New Yorker with ambitions of his own, wouldn't let him get off. Persol dominated the action with a stinging left jab to the head and thumping rights to the ribs and stomach. He also scored solidly with hooks, right crosses and uppercuts." -Associated Press

  • Unofficial AP scorecard - 9-1 Persol
  • Although supplemental points were employed in the case of an even score, such as referee Mark Conn's card (5-5 in rounds), Conn also had it even in supplemental points (5-5 on points).
  • San Francisco promoter Art Benjamin announced a rematch between the two for August 28 in Kezar Pavilion in San Francisco. However on that date and venue Olson was signed to fight world champ Willie Pastrano in a non-title bout. Pastrano was eventually subbed due to injury for Wayne Thornton.

Post fight comment

  • "I couldn't get off. I wanted to win so badly here. I wanted to look real good. I trained so hard I must have left it all in the gym. I was sluggish. I just couldn't put those combinations together. I'd like another shot at him." -Bobo Olson
