"Carlos Ortiz chopped down Battling Torres in the 10th round of their thrilling title fight in the Coliseum Thursday night. Ortiz, the classy Puerto Rican boxing master from New York, turned puncher to retain his world's junior welterweight crown. Torres, winner of 31 straight, took a brutal beating before finally crashing to the canvas and being counted out by referee Mushy Callahan just four seconds before the 10th round was to end at 2:56. It was just a question of time, after the 5th round, before Ortiz would punch the 18 year-old Mexican challenger into submission. After a furious rally in the 4th and 5th rounds, Torres ran out of gas and was hardly more than a punching bag for Ortiz until the end mercifully came." -Long Beach Independent
