Carlos Ortiz 137 lbs beat Kazuo Takayama 136 lbs by UD in round 10 of 10

"World lightweight champion Carlos Ortiz made a punching bag out of Japanese featherweight titleholder Kazuo Takayama Wednesday night. The hard-hitting Ortiz took a one-sided 10-round decision in a non-title match before a crowd of more than 3,000 at Korakuen Gym. Ortiz battered Takayama with hard lefts and right hooks to the body, but failed to score a knockdown. Takayama, with his right eye completely closed and bleeding from his nose and mouth made a desperate attempt to rush Ortiz in the 9th. Ortiz, however, came through with his hardest punch of the evening, landing a right to the jaw that almost sent the Japanese down." -United Press International

  • Unofficial UPI scorecard - 50-40 Ortiz
  • This bout was a tuneup for Ortiz' title defense against Teruo Kosaka on December 3rd in Tokyo.
  • Ortiz received $16,000 for this bout and was set to earn $35,000 for the title fight with Kosaka as part of a package deal.

Post-fight comment

  • "No, I told Ortiz to be careful and to avoid being injured from any butting by Takayama. I did tell him, however, not to hurt him in the last round because we had already won the fight convincingly." -Bill Daly, Ortiz' manager, when asked if he told Ortiz to hold back.
