Carlos Ortiz 135 lbs beat Teruo Kosaka 133 lbs by KO at 2:32 in round 5 of 15

"Carlos Ortiz, 134 3/4, of New York knocked out Japan's Teruo Kosaka, 133, with a hard right to the jaw at 2:52 of the 5th round Monday night to retain his world lightweight championship. Ortiz, a native Puerto Rican, tagged Kosaka with two sharp lefts to the head and followed with the thunderous right which sent the challenger to the canvas. Kosaka tried to get up, then fell back and with a gesture of pain, slumped back. Ortiz gave the youthful Kosaka a boxing lesson. Kosak was game and willing but suffered from a shorter reach, less strength and less skill than his opponent." -Associated Press

Post-fight comment

  • "I didn't expect to finish him so early in the fight. I thought of knocking him out either in the 10th or 11th round. But I knew from the 2nd round that I had him." -Carlos Ortiz
