Carlos Zarate 117 lbs beat Alberto Davila 118 lbs by TKO at 2:16 in round 8 of 15

"Carlos Zarate recorded another knockout in defense of his WBC bantamweight championship Saturday night at the Forum but this time he got his hair mussed. Zarate stopped Pomona's Albert Davila at 2:16 of the 8th round when the challenger was unable to continue because of a deep gash on his right eyelid. Davila didn't run from the champion. In fact, he appeared to win the 2nd, 3rd and 4th rounds. It was in the 4th that Davila landed his biggest punch - a right to the head that buckled Zarate's knees. But in the 8th, trapped in a corner, the stocky 5'2" challenger was under a heavy attack when Zarate's crisp left hook to the head dropped Davila on the seat of his pants as the crowd of 7,100 roared. Davila was up at the count of four, but a cut above his right eye began to bleed heavily, and Dr. Roger Thill was called into the ring to examine the injury. As Zarate waited, the fight was stopped." -The L.A. Times

  • "It was my toughest championship fight." -Carlos Zarate
  • "I was getting away from his combinations. Everything he threw he missed. I got around him. The left hook (that floored him) was a good punch - right on the money. My hand was down. If it had been up I would've caught it. I was surprised that I was cut." -Albert Davila
