Carlos Zarate 116 lbs beat Rodolfo Martinez 116 lbs by KO at 1:51 in round 9 of 15

"Carlos Zarate rode "a lucky punch" - the loser's terminology, not his - to the WBC bantamweight championship at the Forum Saturday night. The unbeaten Zarate, a strong 3-1 favourite among the crowd of 17,468, knocked champion Rodolfo Martinez down in the 5th round and out at 1:21 of the 9th. The bout started so slowly that the fighters heard whistles of derision only one minute into the 2nd round. Then Martinez moved in with tentative combinations, and when Zarate pressed him in the 3rd round the champion responded with a left-hand counter to the head that drove Carlos out to the center of the ring. Zarate finished the round with a bad nosebleed and more respect for his elder. But early in the 5th the outcome became apparent when Zarate simply stepped in and drove a long left hook to Rodolfo's jaw and a barrage of bombs sent Martinez over the bottom strand and onto the ring apron. Zarate then became patient willing to let time take its toll. In the 8th, Martinez' legs were wobbly and midway in the 9th Zarate took him. He caught him with a right hand lead then a left on the way down as referee Larry Rozadilla tolled 10." -Long Beach Press-Telegram

  • "I'm offering Carlos Zarate and Alfonso Zamora $100,000 each for a 10 round non-title fight. I think both of them would prefer this, because neither one would lose his title." -Danny Villanueva of Magnaverde Promotions (the promoter of Zarate v Martinez)
