Carmen Basilio vs. Carmine Fiore (1st meeting)
Carmen Basilio 151 lbs beat Carmine Fiore 147 lbs by TKO at 1:09 in round 9 of 10
- Date: 1953-04-11
- Location: War Memorial Auditorium, Syracuse, New York, USA
- Referee: Al Berl
"Carmen Basilio of Canastota, N.Y., scored a TKO over Carmine Fiore of Brooklyn after 1:09 of fighting in the 9th round of a scheduled 10-rounder at the War Memorial Auditorium tonight. Referee Al Berl stopped the rough, bruising battle with Fiore hanging helpless on the ropes in his own corner. He was half-way out of the ring, his right eye swollen shut and seemingly too badly hurt to continue. Basilio had Fiore in a bad way in the 8th after a give-and-take exchange. There was no quarter asked and none given throughout the fight. They stayed in close, tossing leather from bell to bell with little clinching. Basilio started bleeding from the nose in the 3rd and the flow continued the rest of the way. Fiore was unmarked until the 8th when the eye began to swell and was closed when the fight was stopped." -Associated Press
