"Welterweight champion Carmen Basilio narrowly edged out a majority decision over Gil Turner, Philadelphia, in their 10 round non-title fight Wednesday night. Basilio suffered an eye cut that required stitches from Turner's persistent jabbing in the early rounds. The fight was a bruising battle. Carmen seldom appeared hurt by Turner's punches and he was consistently doing damage to Turner's midsection. Turner almost went down in the 2nd round when he was caught by a flurry to the body. It was the body punching that slowed Turner down enough to give Basilio the winning edge. there were no knockdowns." -Associated Press
