"Carmen Basilio, the pride of Canastota, convinced Ike Williams that the former lightweight champion is at the end of boxing's trail by scoring a decisive 10-round triumph last night at the War Memorial. Carmen turned in an impressive victory with his aggressive style, overshadowing the experience of his Trenton, N.J. rival. He set a fast pace and kept it up almost the entire route. Basilio was butted by Ike's head in the 4th and was slowed down as the blood flowed from a cut over his left eye as Ike peppered the wound, but Basilio's handlers treated the cut well between rounds. Basilio opened a cut over Williams' right eye in the 7th with a left hook but Ike weathered the round. Basilio had his rival groggy by the 10th and was hammering him on the ropes just before the end of his popular victory." -Syracuse Herald-Journal
- The cut Basilio received over his left eye forced him to back out of a January bout with John Fazio in Florida.
