Carmen Basilio 142 lbs beat Lew Jenkins 140 lbs by MD in round 10 of 10

"Although he was exhausted at the finish, bleeding about the face and well spent through the last two rounds, Syracuse's Carmen Basilio, 142, was awarded a close majority decision over veteran Lew Jenkins, 140, of Sweetwater, Texas, in the main event of a professional fight card at the State Fair Coliseum last night. Basilio, using his left well through the early rounds, piled up points while Jenkins bided his time, waiting for openings. Jenkins found them later when Basilio's left had lost its sharpness. Jenkins, who was in surprisingly good physical condition, made Basilio do virtually all the leading with the former lightweight champ pacing himself until the 8th round, when he took charge of the punching, although he never managed to stagger Basilio. Basilio seemed punched out rather than shaken up at the finish." -Syracuse Herald-Journal
