Summary
In a competitive televised preliminary bout to the Cotto-Margarito Welterweight championship main event, Cesar Canchilla won the interim WBA Light Flyweight title by decisioning Giovanni Segura. The first two rounds were a toe-to-toe war dominated by Segura's hard punching, with Segura dropping Canchilla in round two. From round three onwards, though, Canchilla was a busy fighter, using frequent combinations and body blows to outscore Segura. By the eighth round, Segura's offense was largely gone and he hung on as much as possible till the final bell. An accidental clash of heads caused a cut on Canchilla's head on round 11, but did not affect the outcome of the twelve round contest.
