Chango Carmona vs. Arturo Lomeli (1st meeting)
Chango Carmona 132 lbs beat Arturo Lomeli 134 lbs by PTS in round 12 of 12
- Date: 1967-09-04
- Location: Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico
- This title became vacant when champion Raul Rodriguez vacated the championship to fight at welterweight.
"In Tijuana, the national lightweight championship was contested between Chango Carmona, 132 1/2, of Acapulco, and Arturo Lomeli, 133 1/2, of Guadalajara for the vacant title. Lomeli fought as predicted, landing good shots to the head and body and then dancing out of range. As the fight progressed into the 3rd round, Carmona began to anticipate Lomeli's combinations and countered with increasing effectiveness. Lomeli, because of Carmona's heavier counters, switched to southpaw which evened up the exchanges during the middle rounds. As round nine opened, Carmona, who was behind on points, started to land telling body shots on the tiring Lomeli. The last three rounds were all Carmona's but few thought they had been impressive enough to pull out the decision. The crowd of 10,000 went wild when Carmona's hand was raised with a split decision win." -Ring Magazine, December 1967 issue
