Notes
"Going into the 6th, Jimmy had earned the official lead by getting off first against the Mexican with a good mixture of punches, while Carmona stayed with his patented body blows in the hopes of slowing down his younger foe. In that round, however, Chango concentrated on the head, or more specifically, Jimmy's tender eyes. Late in the 6th, the rangy Carmona right hand crashed home across the upper portion of the left eye, causing Robertson to bleed heavily. In the 7th, Carmona danced around the ring, flicking a few jabs, then firing right hands at the eye and doubling up with left hooks to the liver. Between rounds, Robertson's manager, Gordon Shaw, tried desperately to stop the flow of blood, but the cut was running freely. Finally, after 2:05 ticked off in the 8th, ringside physician Dr. Bernard Schwartz pronounced Jimmy unfit to continue." -World Boxing, October 1972 issue
Post fight comments
- "I wish it hadn't ended like this. It was a fight to the finish and I hope Carmona will give me another chance when he wins the title." -Jimmy Robertson
- "Sure I'll give Robertson another chance, I think he deserves it after the way he fought tonight. But right now, I can only think of my battle with Mando Ramos. I've been waiting a long time for this opportunity and Ramos is going to pay for it. I'll cut him up worse than I did Robertson." -Chango Carmona
