McCarthy's death was incorrectly reported as the result of the fight with Young Griffo on April 27, 1898, at Sacramento, CA, after being knocked out in the 20th round. The boxer that was killed was in fact Joseph K. Devitt, from Oklahoma City, who pretended to be McCarthy (as was reported by Philadelphia Inquirer on May 1). Real McCarthy was alive and continued to fight at least until June 1902.
