"Charley Burley, formerly of Pittsburgh, established himself as a leading contender for the welterweight championship last night by taking a 10 round decision over Holman Williams of Detroit. Burley pressed the fighting from the start, lashing out at Williams with hard rights and lefts to take his 23rd straight victory. After building up a substantial lead in the first seven rounds, Burley tried hard for a knockout in the 8th round, hitting Williams with four hard punches to the kidney. Burley staggered him again in the 9th with a stinging right to the face. Burley who received the unanimous decision of the judges and referee, weighed 148 3/4. Williams weighed 148 1/2." -United Press
