Charley Burley 152 lbs beat Jack Chase 155 lbs by UD in round 10 of 10

  • Date: 1943-02-19
  • Location: Legion Stadium, Hollywood, California, USA
  • Referee: Reggie Gilmore

"Charley Burley made a monkey out of Jack Chase, the new California State middleweight champion at the Legion Stadium last night before a sellout crowd of 6000. Not only did Burley win the 10 round battle without dispute, taking down the decision of two judges and referee Gilmore, but deposited Chase on the floor for a nine count in the 2nd round with a terrific right to the head. Burley himself visited the floor in the 4th, but his acquaintanceship with the deck was brief. He was up before a count was started and he finished out the session with some stiff rights to the head. In the second heat Burley showed Chase his right and then hit him with it and Chase took the count of nine resting on one knee. That in substance was the end of the fight." -Los Angeles Times

  • Unofficial L.A. Times scorecard - 9-1 Burley
  • Chase's state title was not at stake due to the fact that Burley had not yet been a resident of California for the prescribed six month period allowed by Calif. State Athletic Commission bylaws.
