"Charley Shipes came to fight at the Silver Slipper Arena Wednesday night. And fight he did. The Oakland welterweight scored a TKO over Johnny Brooks, now fighting out of New Orleans. Brooks went down three times, the final knockdown coming when Shipes landed a right hook to the jaw that sent Brooks crashing into the ropes. Shipes followed with a left and Brooks slumped to the canvas. The end came at 2:42 of the 1st round. Shipes came out fighting at the bell and was in complete control. Brooks appeared sluggish and the few punches he landed were ineffective." -The Las Vegas SUN

  • The SUN reported that Shipes' weight was actually 141.
  • Dick Sadler, Shipes' manager, stated he was trying for a shot at welterweight champ Jose Napoles after Napoles' scheduled defense against Ernie Lopez later in the year.
