WBC World Flyweight Title

"Efren "Scorpion" Torres, on his 3rd try, defeated Chartchai Chionoi of Thailand, to crown himself the new world flyweight boxing champion Sunday night, taking a TKO victory in an unexpectedly one-sided fight. The fight was stopped at the end of the 8th round. The doctor, Herrera Franjutti, ordered the fight stopped. The champion's left eye was swollen completely shut and in his one-eyed state he was being beaten around the ring more or less at will by Torres. Chionoi tried to carry the fight to the challenger. But Torres counter-punched smoothly, delivering a steady series of left jabs, left hooks and right crosses to the champion's body and face. The champion's left eye began swelling in the 2nd round. Dr. Franjutti climbed through the ropes as the bell rang ending the 8th round and the bullring erupted immediately into pandemonium." -United Press International

  • It was reported that Chionoi was anywhere between 8-13 pounds overweight upon his arrival in Mexico.
  • Nicaraguan promoter Aurelio Mendoza offered Torres a purse of $45,000 immediately after this bout for him to defend his title against Eduardo 'Raton' Mojica in Managua. However, the bout never came off.

  • "It was a clean fight and a good decision by the doctor. Chionoi could not defend himself with only one eye." -Umberto Branchini, Chionoi's manager outside of Asia
