"Chartchai Chionoi scored a unanimous 15 round decision over favored Efren "Alacran" Torres of Mexico Friday night and regained a share of the world flyweight boxing championship. It was a surprisingly easy victory for Chionoi whose career as a world-class fighter appeared ended when he lost the crown to Torres in Mexico City last year. Chionoi took charge at the outset, forcing the Mexican backward with roundhouse rights and good combinations to the body. Neither fighter was knocked down, but Torres was cut over the left eye. Torres appeared tired at the end, apparently more from the oppressive tropical heat than from the pace of the fight." -Associated Press
- Both fighters were over the 112 pound limit on their first weigh-in attempts. Torres scaled 112 1/2 and Chionoi at 112 1/4 before finally making weight.
