Chartchai Chionoi 111 lbs beat Susumu Hanagata 110 lbs by UD in round 15 of 15

"Chartchai Chionoi of Thailand Saturday night retained his WBA flyweight title at Bangkok's Hua Mark Stadium with a unanimous decision over Japanese challenger Susumu Hanagata. In one of the finest flyweight scraps seen in recent years, Chionoi convincingly outpointed Hanagata over 15 rounds. Both fighters maintained a telling pace throughout in humid conditions, and both stood up well under the strain. Chartchai had a cut at the right eyebrow, which he nursed from the 10th round onwards, while Hanagata fought with a closed left eye from the same round right to the finish. There were no knockdowns, but the action in the final round was as brisk as the opening canto, with both fighters giving as much as they got. But the champion's superior punching power took a heavy toll on Hanagata, whose courage was applauded by the highly partisan crowd." -United Press International

  • Both Chionoi and Hanagata collapsed at the final bell from exhaustion. Chionoi on the canvas and Hanagata on his stool.
