"Rudi Schmidtke of West Germany took the European light heavyweight championship when he beat titleholder Chris Finnegan of Britain on a TKO in the 12th round of their 15 round fight at the Empire Pool Tuesday night. The end came shortly after the Swiss referee Aime Leschot had the doctor examine a cut on Finnegan's nose near the start of the 12th round before allowing the fight to continue. Finnegan tore in in an attempt to save his title, but Schmidtke met him with stiff punches and in seconds, Finnegan's face was a mask of blood. The referee stepped in and stopped the fight at 2:50 of the 12th round." -United Press International
