SOUTH BEND – Long before the Mohawk, Madison Square Garden or the Fighting Irish, a young Tom Zbikowski sat in Chicago’s infamous Windy City Gym on the verge of tears.

The Notre Dame safety and professional boxer was choked up after hearing the story of a young girl and her battle with cystic fibrosis from a charity fight promoter.

“He’s sitting next to tough fighters, gangbangers, killers, stuff like that and I told him hey at least wait till you get out of the gym,” said Ed Zbikowski, Tom’s father and manager.

Several years later and in much friendlier surroundings, that story was still fresh on Zbikowski’s mind as he stepped in the ring Tuesday night in an exhibition fight intended to raise money for charity.

The event served as a fundraiser for the Tommy Z9 foundation, created to help victims of cystic fibrosis, and Hannah & Friends, a charitable organization started by Notre Dame football coach Charlie Weis.

“The fact that he included Hannah & Friends was a very generous thought on his part,” Weis said. “Right now I just want him to get through the fight unscathed so he can get back and be ready for spring ball.”

Zbikowski made it through the three-round exhibition fight without any problems.

The heavyweight bout was unscored. Zbikowski’s opponent, Ryan St. Germaine, began his professional career last month and has since gone 1-1 with his last fight less than a week ago. Zbikowski was able to land several big blows and draw blood in the first round.

Zbikowski was originally slated to fight Kevin Murphy, a heavyweight out of the Chicago area. However, Murphy was recently suspended for testing positive for unspecified illegal substances and was unable to fight, leaving Zbikowski without an opponent as of Tuesday morning.

“We didn’t really know what to expect, but this is the way Tommy lives his whole life,” Ed Zbikowski said.
