Chris Christensen lost to Emiel Sarens by TKO in round 3 of 10

  • Date: 1964-12-11
  • Location: Nidarohallen, Trondheim, Norway
  • A crowd of 1,200 turned up in Trondheim to watch the veteran Chris Christensen of Denmark against the tough Belgian Emile Searens. " Gentleman Chris " had 76 fights behind him, had held the European Light Middleweight title in 1962. He even had tried to win the World Title from Emile Griffith. Unsuccessful attempts at the European Titles at Welterweight and Middleweight (twice), only made Christensen greater in the eyes of the Norwegian crowd who knew that this was an unique opportunity to watch boxing at the highest level. And that's what they got in the first three rounds. A lightfooted and dancing Christensen scored repetitively with straight punches to the head and body, moving in at close range with crisp hooks. Searens punched back with open gloves and received warnings. He seemed content to last the distance.( He had lasted 8 rounds against aging Sugar Ray Robinson the year before ). In the 4th round a lucky punch from the Belgian opened up a deep cut above the Dane's left eye. Christensen didn't panic, kept his elegance and high tempo. However the amount of blood started to blind his eyes, and he agreed to give up between the 4th and 5th round. The spectators cheered Christensen on his way to the hospital, he had after all given them a short glimpse of boxing at its best.
