"Buster Mathis, Grand Rapids heavyweight hopeful won his sixth straight professional fight Friday night, taking a TKO from Chuck Wepner of Bayonne, N.J. Mathis, 267 1/2, stopped Wepner, 217, in the 3rd round of the scheduled six round preliminary bout. Mathis floored Wepner for an eight-count in the opening round and opened a cut over his opponent's right eye later in the session. Wepner was unable to recover from the 1st round pounding and the fight was stopped by referee Al Linn at 1:58 of the 3rd round. The win kept Mathis undefeated as a pro and gave him his 3rd KO win. Wepner, who had never been knocked down before, took his second loss in eight fights." -United Press International
