Clarence Henry vs. Oakland Billy Smith
Clarence Henry 184 lbs fought without result Oakland Billy Smith 182 lbs by NC in round 8 of 10
- Date: 1949-12-12
- Location: Civic Auditorium, San Francisco, California, USA
- Referee: Jack Downey
"In the second 10 rounder, referee Jack Downey threw out heavyweights Billy Smith and Clarence Henry for not trying. Downey, after repeatedly warning the two boys to start mixing it up, finally gave up after eight rounds and declared the bout 'no contest.' The crowd roared approval of Downey's action. Although both boys were guilty of not putting forth their best efforts, Smith was the worst offender. Billy, a hard right hand puncher when so inclined, failed to throw a stiff punch throughout the bout. Henry started out as though he intended to end the fight early. He threw numerous left hooks which looked murderous, but which were always wide of the mark. Both fighters' purses were withheld by the boxing Commission and both men will be subject to disciplinary action by that body." -Oakland Tribune
