After the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, Claudio Villar became a machine-gunner with the loyalist forces fighting the fascists commanded by Gen. Francisco Franco. Villar was captured and imprisoned before being allowed to leave his native country.
By 1947 he had lost a series of fights due to a serious back injury. Forced to retire from the ring, he worked for a time as a referee. He died after having a stroke.
