• Koch, who competed in Toughman competitions before turning pro, died in the summer of 1998 as the result of a confrontation with security personnel outside Shooter's Sports Bar in Shields, Michigan. A 2004 article in the Anchorage Press reports that no criminal charges were filed against the security officers, but that Koch's widow filed a civil suit against the bar, which she eventually settled out of court.
