Some sources incorrectly report that Con Coughlin died of injuries sustained during a bout with Bob Fitzsimmons, on Sept. 30, 1903. There's no contemporary evidence of this claim, Philadelphia Inquirer in the days following the fight reported nothing of Coughlin's condition being bad or anything. In fact, a Jan. 5, 1910 article in The Pittsurgh Press reported that Coughlin attended a boxing match at the Duquesne Gardens in Pittsburgh the night prior and had retired from the ring and was working on trolley cars.
