Cruz had a succesful amateur career in which he won all 67 of his bouts. Cruz was known for his sudden switch between orthodox and southpaw stances, which he often punctuated with powerful uppercuts or left hooks. Two of Cruz's most impressive victories, came against Joe Kahut in Portland, stopping him on cuts and easily decisioning him in a rematch.
is brother Rudy Cruz was also a Lightweight contender during the late 1940s and early 1950s. Cruz became an official with the California State Athletic Commission after his retirement, before succumbing to cancer in 1959.
