Costello Cruz 168 lbs beat Joe Kahut 175 lbs by TKO at 1:32 in round 8 of 15

  • Date: 1944-09-23
  • Location: Auditorium, Portland, Oregon, USA
  • Referee: Ralph Gruman 4-1

Cruz got off to a fast start in the three rounds, as Kahut boxed defensively out of his crouch. In the 4th, Kahut began to awaken, but Cruz still maintained an edge. The next two rounds were even, with Kahut landing a good right hook at the end of the 6th. In the 7th, Kahut backed Cruz up in his crouch, appearing to have his best round.

While coming out of his crouch 30 seconds into the 8th round, Kahut ran into a right hand that split his eyelid. After 1:32 of the round, referee Ralph Gruman stepped between the fighters to examine the cut. As he was doing this, Kahut's manager and chief second Jack Capri, jumped into the ring and headed for Kahut. Gruman then automatically stopped the fight, since Capri had entered the ring. Gruman revealed later that he was going to stop the bout because of the cut anyway.
