According to a syndicated column by Damon Runyon in the July 17, 1927 edition of the Star-Tribune (Minneapolis, Minnesota) on Newspapers.com, Australians were excited about an American fighter named Roy Moore, whose real name was Roy Moore Gardiner. He was a 21-year-old native of Arizona and was managed by Larney Lichtenstein, who also had an Australian fighter, Billy Grime, in his stable at the time. Moore was a middleweight, but it was felt that he would move up in weight being 6-foot, 1 inch in height.

According to a passenger list in digital form in the California, Passenger and Crew Lists, 1882-1959 database on Ancestry.com, one Roy Moore Gardiner was born on January 22, 1903 in Douglas, Arizona. He sailed aboard the S.S. Sierra from Sydney, New South Wales, Australia on May 21, 1927 and arrived in San Francisco, California on June 9(?), 1927. Note- The date of Gardiner's arrival in San Francisco was illegible on the page with his name on the passenger list. However, according to another page of the passenger list, the S.S. Sierra arrived on June 9, 1927.
