On January 11, 1930, The Pittsburgh Press ran an article indicating that, despite earning over $100,000 in his career, DeMarco was broke in both "body as well as in pocketbook". He had been advised by his manager and friends to retire. DeMarco allegedly spent much of his earnings trying to restore the sight of his blind brother, Freddie. [1] [2]
