"Gypsy Joe Harris beat welterweight champion Curtis Cokes in a non-title 10-rounder Friday night at MSG. Harris, at 5' 5 1/2", made a lot of unorthodox moves, spinning like a top at times, and he apparently befuddled the seasoned champion from Dallas, Tex., through the first half of the fight. In the second half, Gypsy Joe clowned more and fought less. Cokes showed some fast hands and firepower in the last half, especially in the final two rounds when they stood toe-to-toe and slugged away. For Cokes it was the old story of too little and too late, and the unanimous decision went to Harris." -Associated Press

Post-fight comment
- "The eastern promoters want the title in the East so they can control it. I won the fight. He's a strong guy, but I beat him. I'll give him a chance at the title but he'll have to find someone to guarantee me $50,000." -Curtis Cokes
