Curtis Cokes 146 lbs beat Jean Josselin 147 lbs by UD in round 15 of 15

"Hometown boy Curtis Cokes took a unanimous decision over French challenger Jean Josselin in his first defense of the welterweight crown since he won it last summer at the end of an elimination contest staged by the WBA. The lean and rangy Cokes, who at 29 gave away three years, offset that disadvantage by making the most of an 11" margin in reach to keep a left jab flicking away at the challenger and keeping the Frenchman at bay most of the time. Referee Dick Cole made the fighters break when he caught either one holding in the clinches." -United Press International

  • Unofficial UPI scorecard - 150-136 Cokes
  • Attendance - 5,800
  • Gate - $50,000 (est.)
  • Cokes' purse - 40% of the gate

  • "There was no question about the decision being right, but referee Dick Cole wouldn't let Josselin fight his fight." -George Kanter, Josselin's representative
  • "I hear Carlos Ortiz wants a crack at my title. There may be something cooking on that in Madison Square Garden." -Curtis Cokes
