"Curtis Cokes, today holds the Texas welterweight championship to go with his high national ranking. Cokes gave Manuel Gonzalez, a gritty young man from Odessa, a decisive beating in 10 rounds Thursday night to earn the vacant state title. Cokes had a margin as high as seven points in the opinion of the judges and referee and in only one round - the 6th - did Gonzalez even as much as hold his own. Gonzalez got in one strong right to take the round by a slender margin." -Associated Press
