"Curtis Cokes, former welterweight champion, lost a split decision to Mexico's Rafael Gutierrez at the San Francisco Civic Auditorium. A point deduction for two low punches in the 9th round cost Cokes a draw and resulted in his first defeat in seven comeback fights since losing his title to Jose Napoles two years ago. The 34 year old ex-champ was slow to start, as usual, and Gutierrez made the most of his aggressor role. Rafael stung Cokes in the 6th and it apparently shook Curtis out of his lethargy. From the 7th on, Cokes took command and almost made up the lost ground." -Oakland Tribune
- Gutierrez had to pay Cokes $500 from his purse for weighing in 2 pounds over the contracted limit.
- The promoter Jim Pusateri gained nothing on this promotion. The gross gate came to only $7,186 and he had guaranteed Cokes $4,000 of it. Not to mention having to pay an array of preliminary fighters.
