Born John Street, Georgetown, Merthyr Tydfil, Taylor was an excellent fighter who had an extensive career in the UK winning over one hundred and forty fights in his career. He also held the Welsh bantamweight title for a short time in 1929. Taylor won the ABA flyweight title in 1928, and went on to represent Great Britain at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympic games.
