Yoshio Shirai 112 lbs lost to Dado Marino 118 lbs by SD in round 10 of 10

Attendance: 25,000. Interesting note: Because Marino failed to make the 116lb contract weight for the bout, he wore 8oz gloves while Shirai wore 6oz gloves.

"Yoshio Shirai confounded the experts at Korakuen Stadium here Monday night by not only going 10 rounds with flyweight champion Dado Marino, but finishing fast and with plenty of fight. Marino, looking heavy and slow at 118 1/4, bulled his 112 pound opponent around the ring from the start. Marino's experience and weight showed in the infighting as he slammed the Japanese at will from in close. Shirai's long, straight left served to keep Marino away, but Marino got inside for most of the damage inflicted during the fight. Neither fighter was in any real danger of a knockout and there were no knockdowns. Shirai closed fast in the 9th and 10th rounds but suffered a small cut over the left eye. He did, however, finish in good shape." -Pacific Stars & Stripes
