- In 1943 Private Dale Heersche, a soldier from Fort Wayne, Indina, stationed at Newark, New Jersey knocked out Bob Phillips of Philadelphia, at 2:49 of the first round, to win the middleweight crown, at the New York Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions.
