Bennett boxed as an amateur while serving in the Army at Fort Kamehameha in Hawaii in 1936. Bennett was a police deputy in Douglas County, Oregon in the late 1940s. Bennett later sought political office as a member of the Democratic party, losing a bid to be Douglas County sheriff in 1956. He later unsuccesfully sought the Democratic party nomination for Douglas County Commissioner in 1960. He ran a service station in Roseburg in the 1950s and 1960s.
