"It took Danny 'Little Red' Lopez seven rounds of the scheduled 12 to stop the little Canadian Art Hafey in Friday night's featherweight title eliminator at the Forum. Hafey had been down in the 6th round and was stumbling away from several successive rights to the side of his head when referee Dick Young waved a halt at 56 seconds of the 7th. Lopez was comfortably ahead on all scorecards and now goes ahead to challenge champion David Kotey of Ghana. Lopez, several inches taller, had difficulty landing a finishing blow because Hafey showed him only the top of his head and Lopez was firing down all night. Hafey stung Lopez repeatedly with looping rights, but Danny was using heavier ammunition. Hafey still had his hands up at the finish." -Long Beach Press-Telegram

  • Unofficial L.B. Press-Telegram scorecard through six completed rounds - 58-54 Lopez
  • WBC President Jose Sulaiman was rushed to the hospital from ringside with an apparent heart attack.
  • As this was an official title elimination bout, a 13th round was added in case of a draw.
  • Gate - $98,100

Post fight comments

  • "I was groggy. I would never quit. I could have kept fighting and got hurt. It's no shame to lose to Danny Lopez. The knockdown was some punch." -Art Hafey
  • "Art was taking a licking but he remained dangerous to the finish. He caught me a few times with haymakers, but he never jarred me to the point I was in trouble. Mostly I was hitting him high on the head. I never did get a shot at his chin, but for the knockdown I did get it around the jaw." -Danny Lopez
