"Dave Charnley, British, Empire and European lightweight champion, outpointed Jose Stable of Cuba, Tuesday night in a 10 round non-title bout at Liverpool Stadium. The crowd of 3,600 booed the verdict of referee Lew Smith who raised the British southpaw's hand immediately after the final bell. Cheers rang out for the self-exiled Cuban. Charnley showed some of his punching power in the 2nd round but the Cuban fought back in the 3rd and 4th, getting home with good counter-punches to Charnley's attacks. The Britisher was less effective by the halfway stage and Stable opened a cut near Charnley's right eye in the 6th round. The final round probably cost Stable the decision. Surprisingly, he elected to box almost completely on the defensive." -United Press International
