David Bey was the first man to defeat future world champion James (Buster) Douglas by knockout, and had given Larry Holmes a hard time in their fight before losing.

Bey first came to prominence while boxing with the U.S. Army in Europe and was undefeated in at least his first 18 amateur bouts. Bob Taylor's former publication, The Amateur Boxer, was the boxer's introduction to the world-at-large (late 1970s).

He died September 14, 2017, following an industrial accident at the Camden Towers, New Jersey, where he was reportedly hit by a steel sheet.
