I’m Coach Donis, known in the ring as “El Boxologist.” I didn’t have a promoter backing me or someone protecting my path in the sport. I raised three daughters while working a full-time job—and still managed to pursue boxing with only 4 to 5 hours of sleep each night. Despite the odds, I took the belt from then-champion Ricardo Medina and defended it three more times.

Throughout my career, I fought at 122 lbs, a weight that weakened me. I always felt I belonged in a heavier division, but I respected my coach’s decision to keep me there. Still, I pushed through—giving my all in every round.

Originally from Guatemala and raised in the U.S. since I was three, I started boxing at 12 years old. I took up the sport to gain confidence and protect myself from bigger kids who bullied me. What began as self-defense grew into a passion. I realized early on that God had gifted me with a special talent, and I chased my dream of becoming a champion.

In 2002, after years of hard work and navigating the politics of the sport, I achieved that dream—becoming the NABF Champion of my division. When I retired, I was still ranked #3 in the world and the #1 contender in my class.

Today, I’m the proud owner of Donis Boxing Academy in Houston, Texas—founded in 2004. I teach from real experience, not from videos. I know what it takes to win, and I know how to protect my fighters. Whether you’re chasing a title or just trying to build confidence, I’m here to guide you every step of the way.
