Summary
WBC International Middleweight Champion David Lemieux of Canada went to 24-0, 23 knockouts and defended his title with a first round knockout of Hector Camacho Jr. at Bell Centre, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. After some feeling out in the first minute of the round, Lemieux had Camacho wobbling round the ring from the opening bell with right hands. A big right hand which landed had Camacho in trouble midway through the round and desperately trying to hold onto Lemieux, who spun away from the attempts and continued landing straight power rights. A straight right hand by Lemieux with Camacho trapped on the ropes knocked out Camacho down for the full ten count for the first time in his 57-bout career. Camacho, now 52-4-1, in his first bout in Canada, was never in this bout. On regaining consciousness some time later, Camacho had no idea what happened to him. Under Rule 5(a)(i) of the Canadian Boxing Federation, Camacho received a sixty day suspension, which will be recognized in the United States.
Notes
- After the bout, Camacho Jr. appeared disoriented. He did not realize he'd been knocked out and resisted when his cornermen tried to take off his gloves. After a few minutes and some explanations, he finally accepted that the fight was over and walked out of the ring.
