His real name was Delbert E. Woolf, but he adopted Wolfe throughout his ring career. He had been born to Addy and Mattie Woolf. After some time in Montana, they moved to rural farm country north of Bellingham, Washington.

He did not complete high school, but went to work instead to help out his family. He rode the rails, lived in hobo camps, and sparred with boxers, eventually becoming a pro boxer himself.
