Jeff Harding of Australia scored a majority-decision victory over Dennis Andries of Britain to regain the WBC Light Heavyweight Title.

In a brutal, 12-round slugfest at the Hammersmith Odeon, Harding survived an early barrage and came from behind to beat Andries for the second time in three bouts.

In avenging the only loss of his career to date, Harding improved to 21-1, while Andries fell to 39-9-2.

There was little finesse in the fight as both men went at each other relentlessly for 12 rounds. Remarkably, there were no knockdowns. Andries dominated the early rounds, pummeling Harding with roundhouse punches. The Australian never buckled and soon began to take control of the fight with short, sharp punches on the inside. By the sixth, Andries appeared tired, while Harding picked up the pace and continued to find openings in the Briton's defense. Despite cuts around both eyes and bruises over his face, the 26-year-old Harding appeared relatively fresh at the end of the fight. Andries, who was listed as 37 but widely believed to be 39, looked exhausted and had significant swelling to both eyes.

Notes

  • Dennis Andries 39-8-2 (24 KOs) vs. Jeff Harding 20-1 (16 KOs)
  • It was the last fight for Andries at 175 pounds. He returned to action two months later, 14 pounds heavier, and finished out his career as a cruiserweight.
  • Andries had hoped that a win would propel him to a rematch with Tommy Hearns, who dominated him in 1987.

Quotes

  • "This fight was just as hard as the first two. I knew it would be a war. He's a warrior. He's a freak for his age. Whatever age he is, he's as fit as a 25 year old and that's all that really matters. I'm just happy to have the title back. I knew he was going to come out blazing because he always does." - Jeff Harding
  • Asked after the loss if he would seek a fourth match with Harding, Andries said, "I'm disappointed. Damn, was it that close? I've got to talk to manager and we'll see where we go from here."
